Director of User Experience (UX)

Life is short. Work somewhere awesome.

Flare is a breakout cybersecurity Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) company with a mission to empower organizations to take control of their data and protect their customers, employees, and brand by shedding light on external threats. We enable cybersecurity teams to proactively detect high-risk external exposure across the dark and clear web—before threat actors have a chance to leverage it.

We unify the core functionalities of cyber threat intelligence and external attack surface management into a single, intuitive platform.

TL;DR: We are a bunch of geeks who help protect our clients' data (and people in their network) by locating cyber risks.

The Role

As our Director of User Experience (UX), you will be the champion of user-centered design at Flare, ensuring that our platform is as intuitive, powerful, and elegant as it is technically advanced. You will define the long-term UX vision, elevate the craft of design across the organization, and ensure that our customers—from security analysts to CISOs—can leverage Flare with clarity and confidence.

You’ll lead a team of product designers and researchers, embedding UX at the heart of our product strategy and execution. Reporting directly to the Chief Product Officer, you’ll have substantial influence on the future of Flare’s product and play a decisive role in making cybersecurity more accessible, impactful, and human.

Your Purpose and Impact

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to build and scale a world-class UX function that transforms complex cybersecurity workflows into intuitive, actionable, and delightful experiences. You will:

  • Set the Strategic UX Vision: Define and evolve the user experience strategy aligned with Flare’s business objectives and product roadmap.
  • Champion User-Centered Design: Lead research and design initiatives that place the needs, behaviors, and challenges of security professionals at the core of every decision.
  • Drive End-to-End UX Execution: Oversee the full design lifecycle—from research and ideation through prototyping, validation, and launch.
  • Scale and Lead the Team: Recruit, mentor, and inspire a growing team of designers and researchers, building a high-performance UX culture.
  • Elevate Design Craft: Establish and refine Flare’s design language, design systems, and interaction patterns to ensure consistency and excellence across the platform.
  • Integrate UX into Product Development: Partner closely with product managers and engineers to embed UX into agile discovery and delivery cycles.
  • Measure and Optimize: Use analytics, feedback, and usability testing to continuously improve the user experience.
  • Act as the Voice of the User: Represent user needs in cross-functional conversations and at the leadership table.

You'll Be a Perfect Fit If

  • You have 10+ years of experience in UX/product design, with at least 5 years leading design teams in B2B SaaS environments.
  • You have a strong portfolio showcasing complex, data-driven products, ideally in cybersecurity, IT, or analytics platforms.
  • You have direct experience with cybersecurity, threat intelligence, or security operations.
  • You excel at translating technical complexity into intuitive, human-centered interfaces.
  • You have proven leadership experience scaling design teams and fostering high-performing, collaborative cultures.
  • You are fluent in modern design tools (Figma, prototyping tools, etc.) and have deep knowledge of agile product development practices.
  • You use data-informed design and are comfortable leveraging analytics, research, and experimentation.
  • You are an exceptional communicator and storyteller, able to articulate design decisions persuasively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • You thrive in fast-paced startup environments, balancing strategic vision with hands-on execution.

Bonus points if you

  • Understand data science principles and how they intersect with UX.
  • Have presented or published thought leadership on design or user research in complex technical domains.

What It’s Like to Be Part of Flare

You will find a people-first company where work-life balance is valued and we build amazing things as a team. You’ll receive:

You’ll join a high-growth, innovative startup where you’ll see your impact immediately and be empowered to take on challenges for your personal and professional growth. You’ll work with an award-winning team recognized in academic journals, international media, and cybersecurity competitions.

Don’t meet every single requirement? Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. At Flare, we are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace—so if you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
